9As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector’s booth. “Follow me,” he told him, and Matthew got up and followed him.
10While Jesus was having dinner at Matthew’s house, many tax collectors and sinners came and ate with him and his disciples. 11When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?”
12On hearing this, Jesus said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. 13But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’a For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”

David Ragan, David Gilliland and Bob Jenkins were in the limelight of Victory Circle after winning for the first time. However, each of these men paused and thanked “our Lord and Savior” before taking any credit or glory. None of them heard the other, and each spontaneously shared his heart which was filled with gratitude to God for the opportunity to race, as well as, the results of this day. Their words were not an ‘add on’ or rehearsed script they had planned. Bob was asked if the big purse or the trophy meant more to him. After a pause, he replied, “the trophy.” However, earlier, he had conveyed what actually meant the most to him, i.e. the glory of God.
The whole team was joyous, smiling and ‘high-fiving’ each other. Ragan even climbed across the car and embraced his team members before doing the winner’s interview on TV. He was happy, the owner was happy, the team was happy, and other drivers were happy for them! It is a natural response to the ‘Good News’ that was heralded that they had won a race.
Giving glory to God in words and actions to our neighbors is a natural, spontaneous response to the ultimate BEST NEWS ever; that is, “God sent his only Son into the world, and whosoever believes in him will have everlasting life.” This good news is to be celebrated daily as it is not dependent on a personal victory that is sought, but on the historical fact that Jesus lived perfectly God’s Law which we cannot live, and died the penalty that we deserve for breaking His law. Join me in thanking our Lord and Savior for this Good News.
