Folks, I'm brand new here on this forum, but not new to NASCAR as I was a huge fan during the mid to late 1980s, but then took a very long break starting right after when Tim Richmond passed away.
Very recently, I’ve been checking out a used 2002 Monte Carlo SS [*with the checkered flags…] and all of a sudden, after a good 30 years I started thinking about NASCAR again…
*Something about that body style and those flags I suppose !!
So, over the past couple of days I’ve been watching the NASCAR Rewind videos, trying to determine who I’m going to be rooting for – as back in the 80s, I was a solid Tim Richmond fan.
It did not take long for me to dig what Chase Elliot was doing on the track, and by late last night he became the driver I’m going to follow, because to me he’s just that good, and I like the way he drives, and his character seems to be good – and I hope I don’t get jumped on for saying this but in a way, Chases driving style kinda reminds me of Tim’s driving in a way…… especially when Chase blew up that motor in the Hooters car !!
It did surprise me as to how much NASCAR has changed over the past 30 years or so, but after hearing the ROAR of those engines turning well over 7,000 rpm I knew I was hooked.
One thing which caught me off guard is some of these short tracks, and the – is it roval’s ???
I’m not so sure I like how the cars all get gridlocked when they have to slow down to a crawl at those turns, and I’m wondering if this is part of slowing things down speed-wise…
Also the Playoffs - and how the races are now divided up into mini races - it’s all kind of foreign to me, not saying it’s good or bad just not what I was used too.
Either way, I’m back to being a fan of NASCAR racing, and a couple of the other drivers I like are Brad Keselowski along with Martin Truex Jr.
I look forwards to being a part of this forum as well, and maybe by the end of this week I’ll have committed to buying that SS Monte…
